Frequently Asked Questions

Installation
Q.
My computer still runs Windows 95. Can I use ajmScout?
A.
No. ajmScout requires the Microsoft .NET Framework which requires Windows 98 or higher, or Windows NT 4.0 (SP6) or higher.
Q.
I tried to install ajmScout and was told first that I needed the .NET Framework and then, after I installed that, I was told I needed something called MDAC. Why can't you provide everything in the ajmScout Installation program?
A.
We apologize for this inconvenience. We have incorporated the most current technology into ajmScout and yet have tried to keep our installation package as small as possible. Microsoft has been shipping MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components) and the .NET Framework for some time and we felt that many computer owners would already have them installed. Including them in the ajmScout installation would increase the size of the installation package by nearly 30Mb. They can be downloaded here (the download page also includes information on downloading these files directly from Microsoft). They are included on the ajmScout installation CD available from ajm Software.
Q.
Will the ajmScout Installation require a reboot when it completes?
A.
Normally, a reboot is not required. However, if your computer needs any software upgrades such as the Windows Installer version 2.0 or MDAC version 2.7, you may need to reboot your computer. The ajmScout installation program will upgrade your Windows Installer software as needed. The MDAC upgrade and the .NET Framework upgrade must be performed by you.
Q.
After installing ajmScout and other related software, I receive the message "Unable to open database. The 'Microsoft.jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine." How do I correct this?
A.
This message indicates that you do not have a current version of the Microsoft Jet Database access software on your computer. This software is shipped with many versions of Windows and with a number of different Microsoft products and service packs. You can download it here or from Microsoft. Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 282010 for installation details and information on obtaining this software from Microsoft.

Q.
When I export the Test History database to a comma delimited file, Excel has some trouble processing it. Some lines appear to break in the wrong places. Can this be corrected?
A.
This database keeps track of data that's returned from the server during a test. The data is free-form and can sometimes include line-breaks, which will cause spreadsheet programs to prematurely split a line. When you export the data, go to the Fields tab and uncheck the 'Message' and 'Returned Data' columns to exclude this free-form data. Also remember that many spreadsheet programs cannot process more than 65,536 lines of data. If you have a large Test history database, you may need to narrow the selection criteria using the Servers or data range tabs to limit the amount of data exported.
Q.
I'm having difficulty setting up an FTP Login Script for WinProxy when the server requires a login and password. The sample script provided with ajmScout shows how to do an anonymous login. Is there a sample for a login with an ID and password?
A.
You can download the sample script here. I recommend you place it in the scripts directory - normally C:\Program Files\ajm Software\ajmScout\Data\Scripts. The login script is associated with the proxy, so you will need to set up another Proxy Server through the Options dialog. Point it to your WinProxy proxy server and attach this script to it.
Q.
When I add a contact to the notifications area of a Server test, it adds fine but then even though I hit apply and save, when I open it again, the contact is back on the right side. No contacts stay listed, they just keep showing up on the contact list. Therefore, when a test fails, no one is notified. Is this a function of the demo nature of the program?
A.
This problem can occur if the contact doesn't have an email address on their contact record or if the email box on the notifications panel of the Server test dialog isn't checked. Note that when you add a contact to a Server Test, a small box appears in each column of the 'Contacts to Notify' grid. You must check the box labelled 'email1' or 'email2' in order to send a notification. If you check a phone number, that person's contact information is included in the email, so that the email recipient can contact additional staff as needed. ajmScout was modified in v2.04c to issue a warning if a server test is saved with no contact information.
Q.
After entering registration information, the program displayed a warning message stating that I could use use the program after entering the registration code. When I click OK, the program closes.
A.
You can simply restart the program and it will operate normally. This is a known problem that occurs when a registration key is entered after the trial period has expired. The workaround is straightforward, so it will be corrected in the next release.
